Allsion Bar Nook

Constructed from Natural Maple, this bar nook has auto-on/auto-off interior lit lower cabinets and dimmable lit-glass shelves in the wall cabinets. Overall Dimensions 66”W x 24”D x 94”T. This was my first real attempt at cabinet lighting (LED’s make this considerable easier than traditional lighting). It was a steep learning curve but the client was happy with the results (So was I!!)

Bunker Gear Display Case

Constructed from solid Yellow Birch this cabinet has a laser-engraved glass door and lights in both the top and bottom sections to highlight the much-worn bunker gear of High River’s retiring Fire Chief. 80 1/4”T x 22”W x 24”D.

John and Jen's Butterfly Table

I’ve worked with Yellow Birch before, but I’m going to use it on more projects in the future. This wood finishes beautifully with fantastic color and texture variations. 30”H x 42”W x 72”L (expands to 96” with 2, 12” leaves). Shop-made wooden outrigges support the leaves at either end of the table.

McPhee Dovetailed Box

It's not often that I make small items. This one deserves special mention as the brown Maple that it's made from just sings a song when finished. It was the first time I'd created an entire box without a lid...the box is built completely closed then the top is cut from the box allowing the grain pattern to be perfectly matched.

Osadchuck Butterfly Dining Table

The client wanted to have a larger dining table built, but they wanted to use the solid maple top from their existing table. This was the result; add leaves at either end of the table on custom extension hardware. To support it all, solid, 3 x 3 cherry legs and 1.5" aprons will make it strong like ox!!

Venning End Tables

Yup, these are for the same guy that the dining table with tractor wheels was for. 2 x 4 steel tubing make up the bases and the tops are made from antique fir and pine. A whitewash and Sedona Red stain complete the look. Full extension drawers are also featured in these unique end tables. Also in this collection are a coffee table and sofa table.

Grain Chute Occasional Table

My entry into this years Priddis and Millarville Fair was inspired by an antique grain chute that my dad acquired when the grain elevators in High River came down. The best photo wouldn't do this table justice as you have to feel the grain chute to completely understand how neat it is. Years of tumbling, rolling grain stripped all the soft wood from in between the hardwood rings leaving 'fins' of hardwood. It really has to be touched to be appreciated.

McAuley Media Console

The same guy that referred the Fox Fly Tying Desk to me referred this lovely media console to me. It's not anything magical, except for the fact that the clients are huge vinyl fans. Hence the reason for the gigantic drawers! It's made of stained Maple.

Venning Dining Table

Another designer came to me at Art Market 2014 with the description of a large dining table with inset wagon wheels and asked me if I could do it. I said with a sketch, I might be able to work something out. My neighbor is a blacksmith with all kinds of scrap steel in his yard. It just so happened that he had 2 antique tractor wheels that make up the base and 2 smaller antique wheels that make up the Lazy Susan. Thanks to Christian Doppler at Fancy Forge for all the steel work done on this magnificent table. It's 10' long, 4' wide and each base weighs about 125 pounds!

Fox Fly Tying Desk

Another woodworking friend of mine put Jim in touch with me to create something pretty unique (in my opinion). Jim asked me to create a desk that he could tie fishing flies on. But it had a catch - it had to have a closing top because the desk was going to be in their guest bedroom and he didn't want to have to clean everything up every time they had guests. So I came up with the folding top. The bank of storage drawers are all dovetailed and the fly tying vice folds up into the desk when not in use. There's not too many pieces that I make that I'm reluctant to part with, but this desk, out of brown Maple and black Walnut is certainly one of them....it broke my heart to deliver it!

Hill Entertainment Console

I met the Hill's through a designer that I often work with. I made their kitchen island (see My Work Catalogue Cabinetry) and they then commissioned me to do the Stained Maple Entertainment Console that you see here. It features reeded glass door panels and full extension drawer slides. (Sorry about the lack of hardware!)

Gary R Live Edge Coffee Table

Gary saw the pair of Maple live edge coffee tables that I had at Art Market 2014 and wanted on just like it. I couldn't do quite the same thing because the live edge Maple was customer supplied. But I found a great piece of live edge Poplar and added a through tenon of Walnut for the 3rd leg.

Gary Z Vertical Wine Rack

I met Gary a number of years ago when I used to show at Willow Studio. He kept my card and about 4 years later came to me with the idea of a vertical wine rack. The photo of the piece he showed me was MASSIVE, and he wanted it scaled down a bit. So we came up with making it out of a 9 foot slab of Live Edge Poplar. The result holds a staggering 56 bottles of wine in just an 18" deep space!

Kirk Dining Table

Carmen and Andy wanted a live edge counter-height dining table. Live edge slabs are quite costly when you’re looking for something that’s 40” wide so why not add some contrast to the middle and retain the live edge. The live-edge thing is something fairly new to me especially when the material is wider than my jointer (making flat boards becomes something of a challenge!) I added 24” of black walnut between the standing-dead poplar live edges and made the base out of 3” x 4” black walnut. Enough said…

Moncur Vanity

More of the Pre-Confederation Pine. This time, no making it into proper lumber first. Connie and Dave wanted the “barnwood” look. I just cleaned the wood up with a pressure washer, then detailed it a bit with a nylon wheel on the drill and finished it with white wash followed by 3 coats of poly. The hardware is custom hand-forged by Fancy Forge just down the road from us. This is a beautiful piece of furniture.

Pearce's Table

So the story is that Pearce’s influence for the design of this piece was a piece of wall art in an airport. Pearce made the 3-D panel on the inside of the table and I constructed the rest of the table around it. It’s made out of Purpleheart and Wenge and it is really heavy! And it looks super-cool!

Bowles Bedroom

I made a coffee table for Donna out of Nogal (Peruvian Walnut) quite some time ago so when she said that she wanted a platform bed with floating bedside tables made out of the same wood, I was pretty excited. Nogal isn’t the easiest stuff to work with (it has funky grain) but when it’s oiled followed byt 4 or 5 coats of poly, it looks amazing. There was delay after delay moving into their new house, but once the bed was set up, I think Donna was quite happy!

Shaker Tall Clock

I love Shaker furniture…they just seemed to do everything right. And they did it with much simpler tools than are in my workshop! I wanted to enter something in the Priddis and Millarville Fair this year so I decided on the Shaker Tall Clock. It is a pretty fair likeness to the original except for the Nogal I used as an accent wood. And there are no proper workings either; a simple quartz movement keeps perfect time. This piece won in its category and it also won an Award of Distinction. I am very proud!
